I am a technology coach in my building and many teachers approach me regularly about whether or not kids can utilize cell phones for in-class activities.  Our technology department's stance on cell phones is not a positive one, however we are undergoing changes in department leadership.  I'm wondering if anyone has any information regarding incorporating cell phones (with a plan and AUP) in grades 6-8?  There is a pretty large cadre of teachers and parents who feel that the middle school is not an appropriate place for the integration of cell phones and mobile learning.  Any insight on cell phones in the middle school would be greatly appreciated.

Its good idea to integrate mobile phones, we can have MCQ quizzes or Cross word puzzle or any other games like hang man for vocabulary. Pollanywhere for collaborative polling for any event. It is depend or the way we design learning activities so that students can engage more with learning using mobile phones. Mobile phones can be key motivator for learning if we carefully design learning activities with more collaborative and engagement of learner.

I teach in a middle school and my students are also not allowed to have cell phones at school. There is also a very negative perspective of them at my school as well. What I did find is that there are resources that allow students to use cell phones at home like using the texting poll. My students loved doing this when I implemented it in my classroom. Maybe the best way to help bridge the gap is incorporating a cell phone in homework assignments so they are not a distraction in school.

        I teach sixth grade and cell phones are not viewed in a positive manner at my school either. As mentioned in a discussion that I started, I am concerned about integrating these devices if all students do not have access to them. I think many teachers think that most students have access to a cell phone but this does not mean that ALL students do. I would never want to make a student feel left out because they do not have a cell phone. Several students in my grade come from families that are not able to afford cell phone plans. I think that in older grades the amount of students with cell phones would be much higher but there are still several students in younger grades that do not have possession of these technological tools.
