About Me
I am a library media/educational technology specialist at a K-5 school in Long Island, NY. I am also a teacher/editor for MidLink Magazine, http://www.ncsu.edu/midlink/, and an adjunct instructor for Long Island University in their graduate educational technology program. I teach a lot of educational-technology professional development courses and spend a lot of time on my laptop before the birds wake up. I am also a member of the TeacherLibrarian ning - http://teacherlibrarian.ning.com/profile/karenklieg. And I have so many user names and passwords these days that I now keep a stickie on my laptop to help my overloaded brain remember them!

I have created a webquest for upper elementary-middle school classes called "Meet the Candidates." This is an award-winning project, updated for the 2008 election, with web 2.0 tools incorporated. The project is available at: http://eev.liu.edu/KK/election/meetthecandidates/index.htm

Your students will learn about candidates and elections as they participate in this timely project by working in teams to research platforms and policies, develop marketing plans, or plan for public… Continue

Student Email Accounts

Posted on June 4, 2008 at 3:31am 0 Comments

We are considering allowing our fifth grade students to have gmail accounts next year in order to take advantage of google apps. Please let me know if any of you allow this and if so, does your school have an acceptable use policy or permission form that goes along with it? We do not want to be responsible for their accounts; we want them to use the email for educational purposes only. Thanks!

We are looking for elementary classrooms to SKYPE with our school for our Poem in Your Pocket Day event! We are hoping that other schools will videoconference with us throughout the day to share poetry via skype! Interested in joining us? Leave a… Continue

Hello Karen,

I am a graduate student at California State University Fresno. I am looking for anyone who might know of a middle school or schools who would like to participate in my master's research project. I am trying to determine how much time middle school students (6th-8th graders) spend on line using social networking sites and on-line collaborative web sites to discuss academic content. I am looking for 1:1 laptop students and also students who do not use laptops in their classrooms. I need the following: school name, contact name and e-mail address. Thanks!

Hi Karen,

With your interest in Education Technology and Library Media, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service. Here’s a public class recording conducted by Nellie Deutsch on Technology Integration.
