Event Description

A 20 minute live webinar telling three very different environmental stories, all very close to home. The webinar is presented by Dr Neal Lineback, a Geographer with extensive experience of environmental study and conservation, and the author of the weekly publication "Geography in the News".

What can attendees expect?
Dr Lineback looks at three significant environmental issues within or local to the United States and how they have been or are being addressed.

Buffalo Commons
Should Great Plains farmlands that have been abandoned be placed in common ownership, restocked with Bison and returned to their pre-colonial state?

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Huge amounts of garbage are caught in a waste 'soup' that circles two vortexes in the northern Pacific. See its effects and efforts to reduce it.

Everglades Sugar
Sugar farming has devastated the Everglades. See how this fragile ecosystem has become a victim of progress and the fight to restore it to it's former glory.

What will students learn?
In addition to familiar global issues, there are serious environmental threats looming in our back yards. This webinar will teach students to consider their local environment this Earth Day.

Who should attend?

All teachers; Students Grades 6 and above
(requires an internet-connected PC with speakers or headphones).
