WebOS

Is anyone working with WebOS systems? They look like they hold promise but may be too new to be usable yet. Talk about low Total Cost of Ownership, if you don't have to provide anything but a web browser.

I'm not sure if I completely understand the concept of WebOS (I think people use it in two ways: 1) An operating system that runs on the web &, 2) Having an opensource OS [ubuntu, linux flavor, etc] and then running every necessary program using the web [office products like google docs, email, etc]).

Way #2 is the direction I'm moving my class. Using google apps, Moodle, and various other Web 2.0 sites - I'm making it so that my students can use any operating system as long as they have internet connection. This takes care of so many hassles and costs, plus adds the benefits of collaboration.

Personally, I think such systems are ready for prime time. Edubuntu + google apps (maybe Moodle) would satisfy 99% of a school's technology needs.

Breaking the "technology costs lots of money" and "open source is subpar" paradigms will take much longer.

I too question the name webOS but find the concept interesting. The various sites have different functions, most of which I have never tried, but see the potential for them in the future. They will have a lot of growing to do until they are as feature rich as pc oses. They remind me of the main frame era where evrything lived somewhere else except the local terminal.
