Hello all. For years I have been teaching students about two major topics of digital literacy: Internet safety and effective web searching techniques. I want to revamp my lessons on these topics to make them more engaging and participatory.

If any of you have any suggestions or success stories regarding lesson plans for these topics, I would love to hear them. My audience is American 7th graders. Thanks heaps!

I'm an Intern at the WebcastAcademy.net, which operates under the Creative Commons License.
Please take a look at the curriculum: http://www.webcastacademy.net/book/curriculum
The WebcastAcademy.net is a hands on, online collaborative training center for people interested in learning how to produce and host live, interactive webcasts with worldwide participants. English and Spanish language modules are being produced. Further languages are forecasted.

I like the innovative issues addressed, but as things are moving so fast "muddling through" has been the favored approach up to now. Convergence of the course into Moodle and into 3D virtual worlds is under way.
Hi Andrew,

I'm in the process of putting a cybersafety program together for seniors. You can check out some of the resources I have accessed at my delicious a/c: http://delicious.com/madanamohana/Cybersafety_secondaryresources

Hi, Andrew,

I teach 5 - 8 grade tech students. I've been using Netsmartz (http://www.netsmartz.org) for several years, and my students seem to connect with the videos and lessons on this site. However, I feel I had even greater success and much more discussion among my students when I showed them the Adina's deck video (http://www.adinasdeck.com/). Even the boys in my class seemed to really relate to what was happening in the video. Adina's Deck main focus is on cyberbullying but discussion fro the video branched out to other safety topics. There are some Public Service Announcements by the Ad Council (http://www.adcouncil.org/default.aspx?id=42) on cyberbullying that are to the point but very effective. See the Kitchen and Talent Show link. Hope this helps!

Hi Cindy,

I am so glad you appreciate the value of Adina's Deck. My business sponsored the film, and I am very proud of my affiliation with the project. I attended several school assemblies that showed episode 1, the "cyber bully" episode. At each assembly, the 30 minute film peaked the interest of the students and prompted a lively interaction between the students and teachers, along with the film creators and some of the actors who discussed the serious impact cyber bullying can have on the victim, and the bully.

FYI, Episodes 2 and 3 were recently filmed (still in editing on this date 8/18/08), and will be available in October, 2008. Episode 2 deals with On-Line Predators, while Episode 3 examines Plagiarism and Cheating (see www.adinasdeck.com and click on "Info for Episodes 2 and 3"). Like in Episode 1, the story-lines of Episodes 2 and 3 create a lot of "who-done-it" suspense, with plot twists that are sure to promote a lot of discussion on these real, timely topics.

Cindy, on a side note, are you related to Steven and Patricia Schlichting of Oakdale, CA? If so, my middle daughter has gone to school with their daughter Catherine for nine years.

Have a great school year, and keep your kids and their families AWARE.
