How to build a class room portal ?

I would like to build a portal for the students who attend my course in Quantitative Techniques .. where i want to place (a) study materials (b) class notes (c) exam schedules and (d) accept assignments that are turned in by students and if possible, have a discussion forum. Of course, would like use a free service . ... Any suggestions on what would be a good place to go to ?

I was planning to create a userID called "QuantiTech" in NING, and use the MyPage section of this artificial ID to be the portal for the course ... and thoughts or comments on whether this is a good idea ...

I like the idea that you have about using ning for a classroom portal. I am currently working with a University teacher from Algeria and he will be using ning for a global exchange classroom between his students and US students. We created groups and embedded a blog feed and ustream.tv broadcast channel for students to participate during and after classroom meetings. Another portal to use for what you would like to do would be Moodle. Moodle offers you more classroom modules than ning.
