Summer School Solutions?

Hi all,

I have put in four of six weeks for middle school remedial summer school. I teach math, only by default as noone else wants to, and am seeing little academic output. I want to know about your (meaning your district/organization) summer school solutions for remedial learners.
It is painful to know that some students actually struggle and there are remedial formats out there the are rarely revised to meet the needs of learners. Yikes!
Tell me what you know about solutions that work (districts seem to HATE retaining students these days, jeez *note sarcasm*).
