Next year, my wife will require her 5th grade students to have their own flash drive so they can work at home on assignments and projects. The portable data devices can also become class work portfolios for the entire year.

This week Office Depot has 1gig Kingston DataTraveler's on sale for $6.99.

If there is an interest in doing a group buy, let me know. We might be able to get 2 gig units around this price or 1 gigs even cheaper direct from the manufacture.

Is your wife familiar with portable applications for flash drives? She can google it, and there are a wide variety of applications that can be downloaded for students who may not have the needed applications on their home computers.
Hey Peggy,

Thanks for the info on portable applications for flash drives.
The wiki is loaded with them:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_portable_software

What do you use?

BTW: I contacted Kingston Technology about a group buy on the 1GB DataTraveler 100 flash drives.

Here are the price breaks:

1-1000 pieces $6.60 each
1000-5000 $5.89 each

Currently, Office Depot is the best bet.
though I'm beginning to think that using apps like Google Docs and Box.net might be easier to coordinate.

Although you have to make sure everyone has access to an internet connection for that. Perhaps I'm bitter from experience that some of the school systems I've worked with have had less than stellar network performance.

I love Portable Apps as well and the idea that you don't have to be tied to a single computer to have all your programs, settings, and applications with you. You could even load up Portable Firefox with the best extensions for a great experience.
