I LOVE social studies. I teach third grade and that's just about the time most kids are getting to know that there's a world out there beyond their home state. They get excited about a globe, map, and even what's happening in the world. Things start to make sense to them. I used the History Alive Series, which is wonderful.
Happy to hear more on this topic.

I love science - especially elementary science! My students always said that science was their favorite subject in my class, too. Guess the enthusiasm is contagious! Watching kids get excited on a microscope, or out in the field is just the best!!

I taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grades (all in elementary school) for 5 years and now work on a project specifically for elementary science - called Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears! It is a free online resource with lesson plans, ideas for integrating literacy and science, nonfiction books for students to read, and much more! Check it out at http://beyondpenguins.nsdl.org/. I'm uploading highlights from our first few magazine issues - we publish a new thematic issue each month!

I'd love to talk more about this subject!
