Apologies for any x-posting - a good friend of mine posted this question. It would be good to read your responses here:

Dear colleagues,

A question - posed to me by Peter Murray from Apple Australia

Do I know of any school in the developed world today that uses other than MS Word?

I couldn't name any?

Can you?

Is it fair to conclude that Word is the universal word processing package of the developed world?

Kind regards

My school uses ClarisWorks on several labs in the building as they are Apple computers, but even some of those have MSword on them now so teachers can choose. Our two PC labs have MSword. But I don't think it's fair to say word is universal. I have heard of several schools looking into openoffice.org software. It might be true that most (almost all) PCs are using word.
Appleworks (and the new Pages) are viable alternatives to MS Word's dominance. Even Google has an alternative. I don't think we all need Word.
