Looking for 3rd grade class for Math collaboration project...

Hello! I am a tech coordinator for a Minnesota public school. I've recently helped a couple of our 3rd grade math teachers begin a weekly "MathCast" episode, using voicethread.com.

It's completely student-created (except the teacher takes the photos). We've had great fun producing these!

You can check them out here to get a feel for what we're doing...

I'd love to see us begin a collaborative project with students from, well, anywhere! It would be fun for our students to end their MathCast with a problem for YOUR students to solve. Your students could then log in and record their narration, giving the answer and an explanation of how they solved it.

Voicethread.com allows teachers to get the "pro" account for free! This account allows you to create up to 30 profiles with the same login. So, you could have a class login, and each student uses the same username/PW combo, but they can have their own profile for recording.

We don't go that far; I just have the students record in a single profile under my account, at least for now.

So, if you have any interest in this, please get in touch with me. It might be great fun!

Thanks,

Jesse

Hi Jesse! Is this something you are interested in continuing next year? I teach third grade math in Toledo, OH, and it looks like we use the same program. Everyday Math?

Anyway, let me know if you're going to pursue the activity.

Thanks,
Lindy
Lindy/Jesse, I am looking for 3rd Grade classes for collaboration. I'm in Thornton, Colorado, and we too use Everyday Math.
What do you have in mind?
Lindy,

We did do some VoiceThread projects with 3rd graders last year...students narrated over pictures that showed how to solve a certain problem, or play a certain EveryDay Math game. They really enjoyed it!

I'd be interested in doing something collaboratively. One week, we create a voicethread with a question or questions for your students. Your kids, then, answer by replying to our voicethread. I think it could grow into a neat way to get to know your students electronically.

Let me know what you think!
Yes, I would be interested in doing this! Our school is working on incorporating as many new technologies as we're comfortable with. I'll check out VoiceThread to see how it works.

Also, I'm looking into starting a forum for my students to replace our hand-written journals. I'll start a thread with a prompt, and the students will reply. I'm also hoping to have them comment on each other's thoughts. Would your students be interested in commenting on my students' writing, too?

Lindy
Most certainly! Sounds like fun!

When do you go back to school? Won't be long, eh? :-(

The first week back to school I'll ask our 3rd grade staff who would be interested in this project, and will coordinate all of the details!
We start back next Wednesday, August 20. We probably won't be ready to do too much until after Labor Day, though. I'm sure you know how the first couple of weeks of school go!

Jesse,

I love the idea. We just finished week one. After Labor Day I'll be meeting with my teachers. Wow! The possibilities are endless. I'll be in touch.
I'd possibly be interested as well. I'm an elementary computer teacher and could work with the 3rd grade math teacher on this. I know she'd be game.
If you're looking for more people let me know.
Jennifer
Jesse,

No, I didn't fall off the face of the earth, but I don't get full access to Classroom 2.0 at school (sad, huh?) I am still interested in doing a collaborative project. I meet with my 3rd Grade teachers next week, so I'd love to brainstorm and have something to present to them. We have document cameras now that let us write over images and capture video. We could integrate that somehow.

Colleen,

I've emailed our teaching staff to see if anyone is interested, and got no takers! :-(

Of course, we're just starting our school year, and folks are busy, so I'll query them again in a month or so to see if someone's game!
