Anyone using Virtual Desktops in a 1:1 Environment?

We're planning for a 1:1 program and a vendor has suggested using a Virtual Desktop solution in a BYOD environment.

I'm skeptical for several reasons:

• I have not heard good things from people who have tried it
• The infrastructure seems expensive
• Why bother letting student "choose" a Mac and then force them into a PC environment virtually

On the one hand this seems to provide a comfortable environment so that teachers can expect students to have access to certain programs.  On the other, it seems like a bait and switch.
