I have a teacher who uses google apps calendar for his meetings, etc. but was wondering if there was something he could use for students - to post what assignments are due and then have reminders set up, so that they would get an email, or something reminding them of an event/assignment.

Why not have the teacher create a calendar specifically for his classes that only they can have access to. The reminder part is tricky You can set your calendar in Google Apps to send you reminders. I have a daily reminder sent to me each morning from Google Apps Calendar letting me know my lab schedule for the day.

Once the teacher creates the calendar he can determine who it should be shared, In settings you put in the email address of those you wish to share the calendar. I hope this helpsl ~Carol

Instead of reminders, maybe the students should subscribe to each teacher's calendar via an RSS feed. They could have a consolidated view of assignments and the teacher could add reminders (e.g., "3 days left to turn in report:).

Otherwise, check out http://kiko.com/

If the students use Macs, then there are lots of online calendars that can be downloaded into Mac's iCal.

Lastly, if Google Calendar is your strategy, check out these hints: http://webworkerdaily.com/2007/03/22/rock-your-google-calendar-in-1...
