Hello. I have several students that are fully inlcluded in the general education classroom. Two students are LD and one is EI. These students constantly disrupt the learning environment with fighting, talking out loud and back to the teacher. There is no family support. We are a Positive Behavior Support school. There are incentives for following directions, they're given time outs, nothing seems to be working. Some days are better than others. If you can suggest some ideas or resources I'd greatly appreciate it. These students are low academically and receives intervention support and accommodations to their work.

It sounds like your students would either fall into the secondary or tertiary levels of the Positive Behavior Support model, and, as such, need more than the primary level incentives. Is there a PBS team in place in your school that addresses the needs of students who fall into such levels? If so, you might want to collaborate with them regarding an action plan.

You also should meet with the special education teacher who services these children- it sounds like
they might need a BIP (Behavior Intervention Plan). If they already have them, perhaps the special education teacher needs to amend them. If you have a PBS Team in place, one of the members could either conduct a Functional Behavioral Analysis or make arrangements for someone else to do so. That data would help the special educator teacher design the best possible plan.
Thanks for sharing. We do have a PBS team that I am a part of. Sometimes incentives work and other times it depends on the day the child is having. One of the students I know has a BIP. We requested to have it updated. We've also tried the check in approach. The student checks in with another teacher who mentors the child. Some days are better than others. I will check out the websites.
I know the feeling. I'm on my school's PBIS Team and volunteer as one of the "check in" mentors.

Personally, I prefer Dr. Marvin Marshall's Discipline Without Stress, Punishment or Reward
approach, but my school district has mandated PBIS be used schoolwide.
