Hello,

I am trying to look at various LMS system to decide which one is the best and cheapest LMS system I can recommend for my school. Currently we are using Moodle, but I am not the fan of this system nor my professors. I am looking for  a system which is easy for both - Student and teacher to interact for Online teaching.Your inputs will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks

See my collection here. Maybe you can use it as a starting point. http://www.diigo.com/user/maggiev/lms

Thank you. I appreciate you sharing the link

Our school is using Blackboard 9.x but it obviously isn't cheap and I can't say I would recommend it. I have used Moodle, Sakai, and Desire2Learn previously. Out of those, Moodle is probably my favorite but Desire2Learn is up there (just not cheap). We have just implemented Google Apps for Education with the main purpose of having student emails in the cloud versus a server we maintained. With everything else you get by going with Google, you could get this added feature (roughly $2.25/user/year) to turn it into a fully featured LMS:

I have not seen it myself but know it is available and I will be bringing it up if the school ever considers dropping Blackboard. Another one I have played with a little that is appealing from the social aspect is Canvas by Instructure:

I sat in on a demo about a year ago and was impressed with its features in those early days especially its social integration and appearance. May be worth a look since it doesn't handle like the traditional LMS.

Thank you for the information. I swill surely give a try for Google Apps

Google can be used outside of an institution license for Google Apps for Education since the world has access to the Google Apps. Having the institution license does allow for a more controlled environment such as private YouTube/video hosting within the institution and a more integrated approach to student accounts. Hope that helps.

yes it does. Thanks

Most content management systems follow the direct teaching and behaviorist approach to teaching.  Because I am a constructivist, I build my own with a simple tool like Google Sites.  Ask  your teacher librarian for help on this and include various adult specialists into the learning experiences you create. Two heads are better than one.

Its really cool to know that you developed your own using CMS. Which CMS you used for development? Is there a link which I can see ?

Hi, AJ LMS is the best free Learning Management System & is designed for any education formations from small distance training companies up to big colleges and universities. The system allows to build courses, import SCORM content, deploy online learning, manage users, communicate with users, track training results, and more. Start Your own e-learning portal with AJ LMS.

Thank you all for the great information and links you shared. I was curious to know, in spite of having so many LMS system in market today, what is that missing in all the system present today for which teacher's have to look for alternatives according to you ?

That is something of a loaded question... Each one has their own pros and cons. I am one that wants a powerful discussion tool. I can't say that any have met my expectations but D2L and Moodle have been the closest. I also prefer seeing something that eases the processes of grading assignments. Google is the only option I have seen where a student can submit something like a paper that can be graded without needing to download the file to your computer first and then upload the graded paper back for student viewing.

The key thing is that I haven't seen how the addon for a full Google LMS works in terms of recording grades, maintaining rosters, and such. I should add that the basic discussions in Google is using the Groups App and it is far from as robust as I would like.

Most are fairly equal in my mind for adding your content. Any more it is fairly simple to create content from other documents, manually typing it, showing videos, or playing audio. Other than differences in processes, all I have seen are equally as robust.

I am not a huge fan of the typical testing but the truth is that it is still widely deployed for assessment. This is one area that the views of others using the various systems may be the most beneficial to you. I am going to hold back on my opinions since I really only use it enough to train people on our Blackboard system and haven't explored it with other LMSes available. Blackboard is nice and now supports test taking on mobile devices but I am disappointed (as well as faculty I know) in the options for deploying the test and options allowed for viewing/reviewing after a test attempt by the students. Our WebCT v4.x system that is a decade old and retired now had far superior options than the latest Blackboard.

Thanks for such a honest and detailed response.
