Hello! I'm not sure if this is the place to start, but I'll take a shot - any help/comment would be appreciated. My 7th graders are reading Around the World in 80 Days and I'd like them to share the experience with other students via Google Apps or any other appropriate vehicle. In addition, I was hoping to Skype with students around the world as they enter each new country. So I have these ideas ... but don't know where or how to begin! ..... thanks!

You could try using Blogger and adding (up to 100, I think) the students as bloggers. They can upload photos, do short write ups of experiences and comment on the posts/ pictures that others put up. Google Chat with voice and video is a lot like Skype, but it's right there in their Gmail accounts along with everything else.

 

They could make and share with each other (and the world!) documents, spreadsheets or presentations that they make with comparisons between places around the world, varying traditions, etc. Or you could even have them in different teams, each one representing a different continent and they have to make a YouTube video representing the place (popular foods, animals, industries, the weather, national language, etc). At the end of your timeframe, the kids could present their video to the class and the winning team could get xyz prize. All the videos would be on YouTube for all the world/ other students to see.

 

Those are just my ideas. See if any of them could work for you.

My students are reading Don Quijote.  One of the projects we are doing is a Google Lit Trip.  Each route of Quijote's trip will be followed with information, book quotes, pictures, etc.  I think that would work for you too.

Absolutely. I agree! Google Docs do have some drawbacks, but for the most part they are 100% web, extremely useful and have great user interfaces. I really enjoy working with Google Docs.

I was really excited about using Wave in the classroom.  It's good to see some of that functionality filtering its way into other Google services.

I like using the forms function on Google Docs to administer surveys. I have used this for everything from deciding on a new set of classroom rules to sorting the students in my Harry Potter club. Perhaps your students can create a survey to administer to their learning partners around the world.

What are Threaded comments? I'm new to Google docs and there is so much to learn...
