I'm getting ready to put together a lesson on the appropriate use of Creative Commons--including use of the search engine, determining whether an object found is licensed under CC and to what extent, and finally how to correctly cite the source. Before I "create the wheel," do you know if anyone has already prepared such a lesson? I've found many resources aimed at educating teachers, but I haven't found a lesson just on the use of CC for upper elementary students.

I don't know if this helps, but here is how I've been going about it with my seventh graders. I shared a few blog posts: Working Toward Understanding Creative Commons, Middle School, The Gimp, and Copyright Choices, and PB Wiki and Seventh Grade Animations. You can see their animations and license choices here. Some student's work is more complete than others. This one was pretty well done. This is how I did it last year.

Two years ago, I started this topic and had the students create Voicethreads about it. Last year, I had the students comment on what the previous years students said.

This year, the students are creating Voicethreads about copyright and public domain. They are also creating animations and are choosing a license.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

This is a great idea. I think that just explaining attribution to 5-6th graders is different from having them actually create a work and decide how to (or whether to) let others use or modify it. This will be a great lesson!
