Good to see another Kurzweil fan. :-) I honestly think teachers will eventually become extinct. Here's are the stages I see teachers going through:

What?
Traditionally, teachers have answered the question, "What?" They were expected to have the knowledge and pass on that knowledge to the next generation.

How?
Teachers have started to have to directly give information less ever since public libraries, where the information is available to any who seek it. The real question was then how to absorb this knowledge - how to learn. This trend continued as information has become more readily available (now literally at our fingertips).

Where?
Now we're seeing not only more and more information available (often for free), but we're also getting more easily digestible, better organized and higher quality content, specifically aimed at instructing learners. So the only question that a motivated learner really needs to ask is, "Where can I find communities and resources that I can learn from?" As of right now, I don't think there's anything I can't learn without a traditional "teacher." When I need to interactive with experts, I simply do that - via Blogs, Twitter and social networks just like this one. When I want to practice and evolve my ideas with fellow learners, I can do that as well via the same channels.

Why?
So now in this reality, when everyone has immediate access to the How and Where to get to the What, we just need to be told why we should learn, to initially motivate us. At this time, we won't have "teachers" and "students." Teaching and learning will just be a part of social interaction. If you're an expert and you want to stay that way, you'll be involved in a community of experts and learners to constantly evolve your ideas. For learners not ready to dive in with the experts yet, all they need is a curriculum, with links to the materials that will help them develop that foundation of knowledge.

What do you think? Am I crazy?
