Hello,
I am a student teacher in my last semester as a spanish immersion school.  I am trying to plan an enriched technology unit but within my student teaching the extent of technological use with my first graders is playing games on the computer through an educational web site, kidpix and minimal word processing.  There are only few computers available in my classroom.  Through their experience, the students have minimal experience working on the internet within the classroom setting and I am still gaging what they can do.

If there are any ideas of ways I can explore their abilities or if any teachers have any great strategies about getting more technology involved with 1st graders I would appreciate any direction.

Thanks,
Darcy

I love KidPix for the k-1 age group. I use it a lot in my lab. I'll have the students bring writing pieces from the classrooms and they'll type them into KidPix. Then they'll draw a picture next to the words to connect what they've written to how they see it.

I only see classes once a week, each, so I don't have a ton of time with them, however I've found using a program like KidPix to connect their handcrafted pieces to digital creations is a great way to begin to integrate technology.

As for the internet, I don't do any internet work with them. SInce I only see each class once a week I don't feel I have a time consistent time with them to delve in to all that the internet is. As a classroom teacher you might hva emore opportunity.

Hope that helps
