I am presenting to city administrators on the topic of "good first teaching". Think about that first teaching job or exemplary new teachers you know. What does "good first teaching" look like?  What should a principal, assistant principal see that makes them aware "good first teaching" is occurring in your classroom? What can administrators do to support,"good first teaching"?

Tell me what you think.

I will be a first-year teacher this upcoming Fall so my experience is limited, but I would think that a good first teacher is one who is versatile, willing to take risks, and can bounce right back if things don't work out at the first try. Ideally I would like to be a great and effective teacher right off the bat, but realistically I know that won't happen immediately as a first-year teacher.  I know there will be a lot of mistakes, but I also know that self-reflection, an optimistic attitude, and persistent drive will help me get where I need to be. Admin can help new teachers by providing adequate planning periods to allow for reflection and improvement on lesson plans; they can also pair new teachers with mentors for the first year or two to get the hang of routines, procedures, paperwork, and to act as support system for times when they need to vent.
Thank you! I appreciate your time and input. Sounds like you are ready to tackle your own classroom. Best of luck!
