Hi--I'm new here--have you successfully used social networking in school?

I'm interested in hearing your experiences with employing social networking technologies in the classroom. Have you done so or are you trying? How supportive was the principal/superintendent? How did parents feel?

I am formulating a proposal to bring these technologies into a few classroom and assess their effectiveness at impacting STEM-related skills and interest.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Hi, Suzanne! You might consider specifically asking this question at the Ning in Education site, http://education.ning.com/. There are over 3100 members there who are interested and talking specifically about Ning social networks in education. You can also look at the wiki list of social networkings sites in education at http://socialnetworksined.wikispaces.com/.

If you look at the lower right column on any page here, you can see the "tag" list that lets you click through to discussions that have been tagged for specific topics. The link for "socialnetworking" is http://www.classroom20.com/forum/topic/listForTag?tag=socialnetworking

Good luck!
Hi Suzanne~

I have created 2 NING networks, Most recently I created a closed NING for our Mock Trial Team and it is really working well. I had the parents agree to student participation, and have kept it closed. If it works well, and so far I have had no problems, I plan to try it next year with my classes. If it is a closed NING, there really is little risk. NING also removed the ads and the link to other NINGs so I love it.

When I showed it to my students they could not believe we would have something like this in school. It actually increased participation as it resembles their MySpace world. I teach high school.

Totally great!

My teacher NING is www.ipodeducators.ning.com.
