How Are You Using Video Conferencing With Upper Elementary Students?

I am new to video conferencing and looking for ways that teachers are using this technology with their classrooms. What was successful? Are there any cautions you would give a new user?

I found a great idea booklet online called Planning Kid2Kid Video Conference Projects, but am looking more for real world examples of how projects have been used.

Hello Tanya I am great supporter of videoconferencing and have used it successfully with middle, upper elementary and at the senior levels of the school. I teach in a small rural school in Australia.
We have a teacher from Canada teach us how to use a wiki and a teacher from Boston, USA teach us about her school, a little about the culture and on another occasion about the Vendee Globe solo, nonstop around the world yacht race. Photos were shared showing us how the food is packed for this epic voyage, a tour of the yacht etc.
We have linked with a school in Manila, Phillipines, sharing cultures and with a school in Russia. They showed traditional Russian dances in traditional national costumes, their wooden dolls pancakes etc and we showed them some Australiana. Another successful one was a linkup with Antarctica although this used virtual classroom software, rather than skype
I wrote a post on my suggestions for linking up successfully. I made all these contacts with classroom2.0
Your post is a great resource. The comment about diction caught my eye. In my area we speak quickly, with a strong southern accent. Maybe I should do the first conference with a school with similar speech patterns to see how clear my students sound? I could also do a test with a relative in the Northeast or Germany?

Here's a post I did on our first video conference.
Thank you for sharing the Pringle activity you used for your conference. It is an excellent example of how to use technology in instruction. The next technology infusion PD I am giving is on online projects and collaboration, do you mind if I share your Pringle site? Is a project that you plan to repeat?
Sure, help yourself to anything we've done. We teach the same kids every year so if we do repeat the project it will be several years. We did it as part of a semester long study of the inventive process.
