Integrating Technology and Literacy in a meaningful way

Hi, I am an intern teacher and completing my masters in ed. I am working on a colloquium document/research paper and was hoping some of you may be able to contribute to the following questions on which my research is based.

How can the reading and writing process be enhanced with technology?

What effects could technology have on the reading and writing process?

How can technology be used for assessment and show a student's growth overtime?

How might the use of technology foster a sense of purpose in students?

Jan,

I'd suggest looking at some of my stuff on http://www.educationalsynthesis.org/language/index-Alphabet , http://www.educationalsynthesis.org/books and http://www.educationalsnthesis.org/language for reading, poetry, and writing. They should give you some idea.

One easy thing is to incorporate a computer into the learning beginning with learning the alphabet on the keyboard. Under the Alphabet activities above, you will find a "Know your ABC's" flash that shows the alphabet with the keyboard. A good beginning.

Let children "sign in" each day on a spreadsheet with columns for the day/date, with their initials, then their first name, and finally with their whole name. This will be a lot easier for the children to learn than to draw their names in handwriting, and lots easier to read.

Use Interrnet links to authors and books the children are interested in. Dr. Seuss has his own website with games and activities, as well as animations of his books.

Use the links for My Own Books listed in the first paragraph. Use the Early Readers for the emerging readers. If you are in a lab situation, they can read these books on the screen, or you can print out a copy for each student. All of My Own Books include the reader's name in the story so they have a personalized view of the story. The History Series is very helpful in introducing history elements into the literacy program. The book "Walk the World" is an excellent introduction to the world map or globe.

Jan, You can see all the tech projects we've done over the last few years here--look at CSI:Cemetery Scene Investigation, Titanic in the Classroom, or Inventors, Inventions and Robotics--maybe you'll get some samples of question #4. Let me know if you need more info.

PS Our class blog has had 53,000+ hits in 2 1/2 years---that's A LOT of writing!!
Nancy,
