Interested in Connecting with Other Classrooms and Students

I'm a teacher and librarian working in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. I work with students from K-8 and with a focus on technology and literacy. I am using wikis and Nings with my students across the grades as well as at a board level. We run the Forest of Reading book clubs (Ontario School Library Association Book Clubs) and will be running Virtual Book Clubs for junior and intermediate students across our board.  We're hoping to get as many kids involved as possible.
I'm also interested in using Skype and Video Conferencing to connect my students with other classes in Ontario and the world so that we can learn from each other.
This year I'm working with K-8 students to improve engagement in reading as well as research skills in the library and online.

I direct the Enabling Support Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit, with a dual mission to support persons with disabilities and k-12 education. Our support is mostly in the form of online resources and services. Our main site is at www.enabling.org and our k-12 education resource is at www.educationalsynthesis.org. At the present time we are working to establish online collaboration between classes in the Caribbean and Morocco with students elsewhere. We are also interacting with a university professor who has graduate student in ed tech who are interested in interaction with classroom teachers. We also have a presence on Google Wave.
It sounds like you're involved in some really interesting things. I work with grade 2 students (in 3rd term) and research life in different countries. Third term begin after mid March for us so maybe we could line something up and get my grade 1/2 class connected.

In January we're going to be focusing on animal and plant life. It would be interesting to Skype in and have a chance to ask questions and chat about these topics.
We would love to discuss this with you

Sounds interesting....I have some contact with my intermediate students. What kind of topics were you thinking?
Lisa,

Kudos of the great initiative. I would love to help you with a free version of our online School that we built - it also enables peer to peer Video Conferencing. Check it at www.SupercoolSchool.com

Send me message if you are interested.

cheers,

I checked out a bit and I'm interested. Is the site secure. I know this is an issue for our schools and parents. I saw that there is a cost involved but you mentioned getting a free version. Can you tell me more?

Lisa
Hi Lisa,

The site is secure and can be set public or private.
There is a free version. If you like I can give you a quick demo.
just ping me via bjoern@supercoolschool.com

The Global Virtual Classroom (GVC) is a collection of free, online educational activities and resources.  It aims to complement the efforts of governments and educators around the world to integrate technology into their classrooms and curricula and to link their schools to the Internet in educationally productive ways.

The GVC vision is to empower, enable and connect students around the world using Internet technology.  It provides students with a stimulating, positive and enjoyable environment along with the opportunity to develop skills that are essential in the 21st century:  cross-cultural communication, collaboration through teamwork, information technology and website design.

The major projects of the GVC are the annual Contest and the Clubhouse Program. During the Contest, teams from schools from around the world compete in an effort to build websites that best meet contest objectives.  Each team is made up of students from schools in different countries working together.  The websites are judged
on the quality of their content and presentation, effective collaboration,
and a focus on helping others through knowledge or activities.

The contest runs from October through April, with winners announced and cash prizes awarded in May.

The Clubhouse is a non-competitive flexible program focused on collaborative learning. Projects can include any topics such as: language class exchanges, environmental research, collaborative science projects, and discussion groups.  This program can begin at any time and last months or multiple years.
I am looking for classrooms to collaborate using Skype. I am an Instructional Technology Specialist at an elementary school (K-5) in Western NY. It sounds like between the grade levels and topics you see we may be able to collaborate. I will have to check with teachers to see what their goals are, but I will keep this information for that time.
I am getting ready for the new school year and thought I'd get in touch with you. Are you still interested in connecting through Skype? I will be working with all grades 1-2 times per week but could also assist in connecting with the classroom teachers as well. I'm going to be in the library using nings, wikis and teaching research and tech skills. What does your position look like for the fall?
I am a grade one teacher and part time librarian in BC I am involved in a graduate tech course and would love to do some online collaborative activies later on this year.
Hi and thanks for the interest. What is your role in the library? What ideas do you have to collaboration. I'm interested in connecting student using skype. I've set up wiki sites for students to talk about various books and novel series throughout the year. For the most part I'll be focusing in on research skills and tech skills throughout the year with K-8 classes as well as a couple of special ed classes. Let me know what you think. You can contact me directly through lisa.degraaf@granderie.ca As school gets busy that is the email I check the most. I look forward to hearing from you.
