iPads in the Classroom

I recently saw a news story in which a school district was providing iPads to kindergarten students for use in the classroom. I thought this was crazy and then learned that the 8 year old 3rd grader that I tutor also received an iPad for Christmas! Are things like iPads really necessary in the classroom, and what are the benefits of having such expensive tools available for students?
