Pulitzer Prize Winning Cartoonist, Pat Oliphant, published a questionable cartoon on Wednesday, March 25. The cartoon depicted a goose-stepping uniformed figure, wheeling a fanged Star of David nearing what resembles a small female figure labelled "Gaza." The leading Jewish Rights group who fought the issue was the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, which is backed by nearly 400,000 Americans. The cartoon eludes to Israel's aggression on Palestine, which has taken the lives of approximately 1400 palestinian people. I read this article before seeing the actual cartoon, and the issue at the time did not seem as serious as the public had made it out to be. After searching carefully for the cartoon--as many news sites have been ordered to take it down--I found it and immediately felt the disapproval and unhappiness that many others before me had felt. This cartoon may attack major issues today, but the offensive appearance it gives to Jews world-wide is incredibly inappropriate. By using a Star of David, the cartoon does not refer to Israel alone but Jews as a whole. The cartoon and bibliography are attached.
