Let Freedome Swing: A Curriculum about Jazz and Democracy

Let Freedom Swing was born during conversations between two great public figures.  In anticipation of President Obama’s inauguration in January 2009, former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and musician, composer, educator and Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center Wynton Marsalis teamed up for a concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The resulting conversation between O’Connor and Marsalis about the connections between jazz and democracy culminated in three brief documentaries (produced by Documentary Group), E Pluribus Unum, We The People and A More Perfect Union

Faculty members at Teachers College, Columbia University have created a study guide for these documentaries. The study guide is to provide educators with a series of suggested discussion questions and classroom activities through which students can delve more deeply into the issues introduced in three brief documentaries.
