Needed - Innovative ideas for teaching English Language Learners

I've been asked to speak to an audience of ELL educators about innovative ideas for teaching their English Language Learning Students. I think this was as a result of a post I wrote where I shared 5 Translation Tools That Serve as Fantastic Resources for Students ....

I'd love to get ideas and suggestions from those at Classroom 2.0 about innovative ways you are teaching ELL students.

You could try a classroom response system. It is an interactive, hand-held "clicker" device that allows you to ask questions to your class and get real-time feedback with a graph that shows instantaneous class progress. You can use this in the middle of a lecture, a supplement to your lecture, quizzes, attendance, or simply for polling purposes.

Many times, this type of classroom technology can be funded through a grant. It is exactly the type of educational technology President Obama wants to fund through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (specifically ---> http://www.ed.gov/programs/edtech/factsheet.html).

I, personally, know that H-ITT (Hyper-Interactive Teaching Technology) makes one of the most cost-effective, versatile, easy to use and fully functional packages for this purpose. They can integrate with your any teaching style... bringing in a whole new level to your teaching strategy!

If you'd like, I can certainly give you more information and/or get you set up with a H-ITT representative who can even let you demo the product for 60 days... at NO charge to you. It's no doubt this will be in EVERY classroom in the near future for educational heightening.

Feel free to contact me, anytime, cnewberr@mail.usf.edu. I support the growth of every aspect of education as I am a recent college graduate myself supporting educational enhancement.

Good Luck!! :-)

Hi Chelsea,

I am quite familiar with the technology in fact I recently wrote about how educators can get the benefit of what devices such as those have to offer without actually having to purchase anything in my post The Why, What, and How of Getting the Benefits of Student Response ... .

I apologize, but your response doesn't seem to be answering my question, but rather it sounds like you are pushing a system. While I certainly welcome feedback from a vendor or someone who just happens to be pushing a product they love, I would appreciate feedback that goes beyond the "what" and to the "how" can this or other tools be used to engage English Language Learners? If you could provide me with ideas for that, I would find your feedback quite helpful and would be most appreciative.
Hi, I have a collection of fun, short and simple vocabulary videos at www.WordAhead.com These have worked wonders with a lot of students. You may want to check out the following widget.

Some teachers have actually engaged their students in learning difficult English words by assigning word projects to the students. One such example is here:

Teachers can also make their own wordlists and embed their personalized wordlist widget (like the one shown above) in their blog or site.
I hope you find this information useful.

Also, the webcasts at http://www.colorincolorado.org/ are outstanding. I use them in my teacher training classes and online.

I also have my own website with awesome instructional supports for teachers of ELLs. In the 14 months the site has been up, I have received over 3,000 visits from the US and 22 other countries.

My blog is new though and I am still trying to figure out how it works:)
