Also I forgot, I introduced the site by pulling it up on the projector and showing them the features. I went ahead and loaded a bunch of stuff, links, etc, first.. Then gave them a homework assignment where they had to use it!
I will post on my own discussion, that I've had on this topic but not sure if it shows up on top. Today I excitedly started inviting my students by assigned periods/groups to joing my ning network. I invited them by making up six individual periods into their own groups and then inviting friends for each. However, when I go to my main page and press members, they all show up on the main page.
I only want students to access to their indivdual groups/periods. I thought I could do this as an administrator? Can anyone please tell me what I have done wrong???
I was able to invite them to the group, but they are still showing up on the main page which I don't want to happen, because then they will start chatting with their friends from other classes.
I've been using Ning ( www.futureclass.co.uk.) as an online extension of the classroom since last summer and all our Y10, Y11 and most of our Y9 (ie 13 - 16 year olds) use it for English.
We blog, discuss, submit work for assessment (including oral work!), collaborate on exercises and projects, access podcasts, embedded Voicethreads & Etherpads and have the facility for video messaging and conferencing via Tokbox.
Colleagues from UK and US have 'sat at the back' for a while to see what we're doing. If you're interested, drop me a line.
I also gave an in-service training presentation on this which you can listen to at ClassCasts.Com.
Welcome opportunity to link with the like-minded!
Hi Teachers,
I just got my ning spot up and going and tomorrow, I will introduce it to my classes. I see there are lots of apps you can put on your page. Does anyone have some good ones to reccomend and any good rss feeds good for high school students.
I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow.
Eric

Create a NING Network for each class group. Invite them to just the group you want them in. If you do that then they won't even see their friends from other classes. Since you already invited them to the one group you may want to create all new ones to do this. On the main page look in the right column near the bottom and it says:
"Create a Ning Network!" Click on that and you create another Network. I found it is best to create one Network for each class. If they are all in the same course, but different sessions you may want to keep them in the one Network, but they will chat: not that that is a bad thing. I wish I could get mine to do that more. That's the magic.
