My district is in a search for new online course platform and I was wondering what platforms you may use, what you like about it, and the ease for students and teachers?

We are also looking for a system that will resemble what students will use in college while keeping the cost down at the same time.

We recently decided on a distance-learning platform, but we're using it more for teacher trainings than for working with students. We looked at several possibilities, including WebEx, AT&T Connect, and Elluminate. We downloaded the trial versions of those to test. Eventually, we decided on Elluminate for a few reasons, including:

  • intuitive to use
  • online tutorials and trainings for moderators, as well as participants
  • VERY well-supported (company representatives answered all of our questions within 1-2 days, while we never got a single call-back from AT&T)
  • Elluminate is used in many colleges and schools and, thus, a lot of people already have experience with it
  • Elluminate is focused almost exclusively on online courses, so it's at the head of the pack in terms of development, etc.
  • there were a variety of subscrptions to suit our needs, so we could start small and grow as needed

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Adobe Connect Pro.  $66 per month and is extremely stable.  Elluminate is awesome if you can afford it.  We couldn't and have been very satisfied with Adobe's application.

I guess that I forgot to mention that we are currently using Moodle and have had many difficulties dealing with support. Moodle is free which makes it nice in that manner but there is no one to call for support.
