Rules of use for Student Photos

In our school, parents are asked to sign a release form at the start of the year which indicates that pictures may be taken of the child for use in promotional materials, news stories, yearbook, etc. Whether or not a student is permitted to have their picture published is then stored in our SMS or in a spreadsheet and referenced before any picture is used of the student.

Same for me. Parents can choose from a list of outlets they would find it acceptable to find their child's image published. I didnt really want to get into the whole photo thing on my class website, so just do not student photos on there.

Hi Rob/Jonathan, are teachers allowed to post a student picture with a name for example? Are teachers allowed to use pictures of their students on their personal websites or social networking sites?

Our district has a photo release form that all students have to sign. We also have all our students parents' sign permissions for photos, publishing student work, student email, student penpals, corresponding by email with parents, etc. We cover all our bases.

I have never posted or published a student photo with out the express written permission of the parent. And if posting online, I do not identify the student by name. It may be legal to do so but in an age of online preditors, it scares me.

I've posted gazillions of student photos on our websites but never identify by name.
