I teach middle school language arts, and I've broken students into cooperative groups to explore topics such as various comma usage situations, then they prepare a power point and present their findings to the rest of the class.

They also work in 2 person partnerships to explore a notable African American for a Feb. project.  They develop a dialogue, skit or conversation between the person researched and someone else from that person's life and present it to the class.

In my 7th grade history class, I sometimes assign  2-3 person groups different sections of the chapter reading assignment.  They prepare a poster with the main ideas/discussion points from their section and then guide a discussion with the rest of the class.

Thanks for your ideas - they are great!  I can use your idea for a notable African American project  - instead I could use a notable Spanish artist, etc...
