It is not a new fact that schools have been shrinking budgets and
cutting spending, especially in IT. I have heard from a number of
schools that they have cut their IT staff down to two to three people
for an entire district! This can become overwhelming for those techs,
especially if schools are not making strides to help compensate for
their newly shrunken IT staff.

One of the ways school districts can compensate is by implementing and IT asset management program in
their district. With such a program, their newly limited IT staff can
now fully support and manage across their districts with ease. For
example, if you are a tech at an ISD and need to offer IT support and
management to 10 schools in your district, you can use an IT asset
management product to do so quickly, efficiently, and effectively.
Programs such as CrossTec EMS allow you to remotely manage and support
all of the PCs, Macs, iPads, Windows Mobile phones, ect in your
organization from one central location. With one simple interface you
can pull any hardware or software information off of any device in your
organization, even down to the version of BIOS or how many RAM slots you
still have available. EMS also allows you to distribute software
installation packages to all computers across your organization with the
simple click of a button.

You would be surprised how many schools do not have a solution like this in place. Also, I agree that programs such as this cannot replace IT staff, but they can make it more manageable for those in this situation.
We keep losing staff too. When someone retires they are often not replaced. I just hope our budgets stabilize soon. The good news is "race to the top" and the extra money that congress recently approved helps. I do believe that automation can help ease the pain of a decreasing staff size.
