Technology
Can anyone expand on technologies they found useful and technologies that weren't as useful?
One technology that I am really interested in is the iPad. I have read various blog postings about iPads and students with Autism. Does anyone have experience working with a student with Autism who has an iPad or utilizes an iPad?

Hello Amanda,
My name is Marianna and I work as a special needs/resource teacher in a middle school. In addition, I have a Master degree in educational Technology. You have asked a truly broad question regarding technology and autism. Many of my students with autism and other learning disabilities use technology daily; each of them uses technology that fits their cognitive and physical capabilities.One of my students is using the iPad very successfully , in the classroom. His teacher is very agreeable with the shortcomings of our technology crippled environment and has no difficulty with all of the students work posted into a folder so that it can be viewed by his parents.

Dear Amanda,
Autisim is a term that now encompasses ALL forms of congenital learning disabilities. Prior to this definition expansion, Autism was a diagnosis that had specific and limited behavior characteristics of self withdrawal and unresposiveness.
It is difficult to expect a defined answer to your question. If I come across any info, I'll pass it on.JJC

Hello Amanda, Regarding your question about technology and students with disabilities: when I was an elementary school computer teacher I taught special and regular education students how to touch type using a method by Orton Gillingham. It was a song that the students learned. Since I only had one computer in my classroom I made Xerox copies of the keyboard and laminated them. Three weeks later all of the students could touch type. It was about 12 or 13 years ago and I remember going to a workshop offered by the school district. I don't have anything more concrete information to offer but that. I found several web resources through Google, though:

I remember that the students loved this method. I used it all the way down to 1st grade and it was very successful.

Hi,
Thank you for the information, I am a Dyslexia tutor and use this method to teach students reading skills. I am sure that this will add to their bag of skills too.
