Hello everyone,

I am currently attending Illinois State University studying to be a Special Education teacher LBS.  In one of my Assistive Technology classes, we have discussed "Teaching in the 21st Century" and what this implies for us as future teachers.  Another topic we covered is "when to use new technology" such as the iPad.

Teaching in the 21st Century, to me, means that as a teacher, I need to know many different forms of technology.  Kids are currently using so many forms of technology.  I'm sure there are some that I don't know of or know how to use.  I think that to be an effective teacher, an individual needs to know technology, or most of the technology their students use.  Also, I think it is important to include technology into the classroom.  Students aren't as engaged with textbooks anymore.  They seem to be so much more engaged when they use technology.

I would love to know some of your thoughts on technology in the classroom and being a 21st century teacher.  Please help me expand on this topic!!

Thanks!
Amanda C.

Hi Amanda,

As a BBT teacher (Broad Based Technology) technology is used in all classes. Modules have been created for students to follow. They can pick and choose which ones they would like to complete but must complete a minimum of 8 each semester. As their teacher, I help them incorporate intergrated projects for other classes. A photostory for Social Studies, a video for a science experiment, or a pod cast for a book talk in English. This gives the technology they are learning to use a sense of purpose rather than using technology for the sake of it being technology. Most students love the robotic module.

As a science teacher, my students work in groups on PBL (project based learning) activities and use technology for research and final product choice (ppt, video, podcasts etc). It is important for students to see the purpose of using technology in the classroom and that it isn't being used without purpose. The use of vernier probeware is gaining approval with my students in my science classes as well... acting like young scientist out in the field taking water samples and doing tests.

It is very important for students to gain 21 Century skills and competencies in a global society where technology is crossing all borders, and where classrooms that are oceans apart can collaborate together, however it is the responsibility of the education system to do so in a meaningful and purposeful fashion.
