Their Eyes Were Watching God: DQ #1

As Hurston opens the novel, she provides the reader insight on the

differences of men & women. She also gives enough information on

the main character between chapters 1 and10 to allow us a

window to her struggle and the basis for her journey throughout the

novel. We learn Janie's upbringing, her thoughts and some of her

crsis'. It is obvious that she has been seeking something since

Hurston introduced us to her in chapter one.

In your opinion, why is it important that she finds what she is

looking for? Although tradition has shown to be an intricate part of

the Janie's life, discuss how this tradition has affected her and how

the lack of tradition, upon Jody's illness- and later death, becomes

empowering for Janie in her quest for freedom and understanding of

self. Consider the condemnation that may take place by those in

Eatonville and it's relevance to her struggle. Feel free to discuss your

personal views (supporting or negating); but you must provide

evidence to support your claim.

In compiling your response, consider what Janie thought would

make her happy versus the changes that have taken place between

chapters 9 and 10. Provide an intellectual response that can be

supported by the text. Remember all answers are to be written in

.I agree because she did to seem to run away from her promblem alot of time until she met Jody Starks .Then she was tied down toi him until he died,so eventually she would have got the freedom she was searching for but she was also miss love during the process.

Janie had finally found the man she loved but when he died....it seems as if she was able to be better on by herself now that he had died..basically she was emotionally stress now she can just chill and be herself

I think that Janie is looking for love and freeedom. Simply because she was abanded by her parents.Jody was tieing her down in the store, and on top of that Janie was forced to be married the first time to Logan Killicks so she really wasnt free mentally nor physically.

I agree that Janie was looking for love & freedom. But I disagree that she wasn't free mentally or physically at all, because she wasn't free in her marriage with Jody until he died. She did become free mentally or physically, it was just after his death.

-Janie is searching for freedom. It is important for her to find what she is looking for because Janie has never really experienced freedom before, or she wouldn't be out searching for it.

Its important that Janie finds what she is looking for because she went through alot and deserve nothing but the best. Her as a young girl who didn't grow up with her parents and always get talked about by other kids;can be very depressing.It seems like she had a rough life growing up.And thats the reason why it is important.
