Our sixth grade group of teachers will be piloting an EDU implementation of Google Docs this year.  From what I've heard, the administration rights are all or nothing, so a less qualified teacher could take down the system.

This seems too rigid to me and there has to be a logical way around it.  Please share your experiences if you are using this tool.

I'm familiar with Docs itself because I've had it under my own domain for the last two years.

We've been using Google Apps for a couple of years now and have had no problems. Teachers do not all need to be administrators on apps. In fact in our school of 70ish faculty we currently have 6 administrators and only two of us actually muck around with the settings. The other 4 are admins simply to allow them to help students reset passwords and such. Many of our teachers use Apps with their classes without being domain admins.

In Google Apps Education you can now create "organizational units" within your domain and assign access to different services differently for different members of the domain. This is a fairly new feature and I haven't had a chance to play with it yet.

I'm not sure if any of this actually answers your question, feel free to ask more if you'd like more detail on how we administer google apps.
Steve,
This is exactly what I needed to hear. I need to know what to spend time researching, and what elements would be the most effective for my teachers and students. One building admin seems as though it would be efficient.

I'll look at the organizational units. I like the idea of customizing the offerings for different groups.
