I was just informed that I am able to spend $1,000 to purchase two digital video cameras for our school. The catch is that the purchase must be made within two weeks. Any suggestions for a video camera appropriate to introduce middle school students to the concept of developing video projects.

Hi Jeff -- There's a good article today comparing different "pocket video cameras" in Digital Inspiration. Amit is a knowledgeable blogger when it comes to technology. Good luck with your purchases.
Reading some of the comments so far--I've been using a Mino Flipvideo this year and have had issues with the sound.
I needed a video cam to use in the classroom for capturing student learning/teaching--decided on a Sony HDR-SR11. It has a spot to attach a mic on top to capture sound at the front of the class, but the interal mic works really well. Right now becoming familiar with it, but pleased so far.
I know you wanted to purchase two for $1000--so this would be over your limit.
