Web 2.0 Tools...A Quick Survey For Those of You Using Them.

Part of an assignment in my Internet Tools for Teaching graduate course is to seek out fellow educators who are currently using Web 2.0 tools to see what advice they could offer to other educators wishing to start incorporating them within their classrooms. So, if I could break it down into three separate questions, could anyone answer these for me? Thanks so much!

1. How did you decide which tools to use with your students?
2. What obstacles did you need to overcome to obtain permission to do such a project?
3. What advice would you give to a teacher seeking to replicate your efforts?

1. I was redesigning a course called Technical English into Global Technical Communication for the express purpose of promoting more 21st century skills. I looked for anything that was a) web-based, b) user-friendly c) used frequently (or increasingly) in real-world jobs.

2. I was actually applauded for my vision, no matter that I was making it up as I went, and encouraged to do all I could. I was cautioned about cyber-bullying opportunities in my use of technology. Access is sometimes a problem, but it is amazing what a few minutes of explaining your rationale to the tech coordinator will do for access.

3. I would say use your summer to try things out and search for tools, get everything set ahead of time and be ready with it. Kids sense when you are shifting on the fly. It's ok to learn with them, but the initial use should be deliberate and well planned. I would also encourage them to visit sites like this for ideas. We learn best from others.
