I actually believe iPads are "getting there" quicker than even I believed they would. However, the issue is that they still run a mobile operating system. Due to this, programs are limited in the their capacity. With the addition of apps, there seems to always a way to take a back channel and accomplish desired tasks. Yet, constant use of apps to get things done is often more annoying that satisfying.
A cheaper way to achieve portability and productivity is to pursue netbooks. These operate with the use of full developed operating systems, helping faciliate productivity. Yet, even though netbooks would be the wiser choice now, I believe iPads could be a strong tool in education when enough feedback is provided and considered during product design.
