A friend of mine just sent along a link to the Yale School of Art's new site, almost entirely student-generated through an open wiki platform.  With the exception of certain "critical" information like info for applicants, students all have a password and can change text and image files throughout the site:

http://art.yale.edu/Home

I've checked back a few times and, based on the number of changes every couple of hours, the students are fairly excited.  Now, my students aren't all emerging artists, but I'm thinking that usign wikis in the class is a great way to excite and empower students.

Anyone have any ideas or experiences with using wikis to generate projects/class sites, etc.?

I have some experience using wiki for classroom management. I've been adopting this since last semester (Jan 2010), and this is the second sem I'm using wiki. I create 1 wiki for each subject/class, depending on the needs for interaction.

For my Multimedia Programming subject last sem, I asked the students to create an individual content page, and that would be their 'portfolio' of exercises and assignments (http://cc206-mmp.wikispaces.com). As for my Research Methods subject (also last sem), I encouraged students to constantly write and discuss on their proposal topic, also in individual content pages. I leave comments using the discussion page available for each content page. I could see their ideas groomed from their updates online (http://cc113-rmc.wikispaces.com).

As for this sem (May 2010), I use wiki as a 'theory project' for my Multimedia Programming students, asking them to cover the theory by compiling the information required according to chapters. It's a group project, and I expect them to constantly update and edit the page until the date of the 'submission'. This is currently in progress, so there's not much updates to be viewed at the moment.

Wiki can be used in many ways, depending on your objectives of having the tool used as part of your coursework. Hope this little sharing of ideas helps.
