I've used Showbiz and Pinnacle with my middle school kids when doing claymation. These have a nice video clip management system and some nifty effects they really enjoy (green screen, etc..)

Stikfast kits I've heard are fun too, but I haven't tried them..

If you use a mac iStopmotion from Boinx software is a product that I've had success with.

Bob Greenberg who did 'Where The Wild Things Are' used www.samanimation.com to do some stop motion. Hope that might help.

Stop Motion animation films are now simpler to do with the new Windows Live Movie Maker


"Stop Motion movie made with Windows Live Movie Maker: All you have to do is take a bunch of photos in a row, import them into a Movie Maker project - then set the 'duration' of each photo to somewhere between 0.08 and 0.15 seconds each. And boom! Stop Motion! "

We have some funds available to purchase software for claymation and general movie making. One of the students suggested "ULead" by Corel. Has anyone had any experience with that program?

I think this depends on a couple of things - the computers you are using and the grade level of your students. There are other products out there that have a lot more bells and whistles. Avid Pinnacle Studio and Adobe Premiere Elements are two examples I have seen in the classrooms used at both the middle and high school levels. Of course one of the differences is that Movie Maker and iMovie 8 are included with a computer where Avid and Adobe Premiere must be licensed which brings in a funding challenge espcially when you are looking at a lab situation. The other challenge is the state of the computer.

Since I am more of a "PC guy" I can speek more to MovieMaker than iMovie, and what I can tell you is that MovieMaker during a rendering creates temp files. These temp files will accumulate over time eventually leading to a performance hit if preventative maintenance is not performed regularly.
