Access is the driving force behind global technology integration.  With mobile devices and tablets coming of age, we have an opportunity to shift funding, vision, and efforts to get all students connected so that every student becomes the "smartest kid in the room". With a little creativity and a lot of effort, 1:1 access is happening. We're not talking about what we can do, we are saying what we are doing, right now. How is your school or organization doing this? Are iTouches and other mobile learning devices being deployed? How are you handling security and connectivity? Can students access WiFi at school with their own devices? Please share and come back often so we can all learn and grow together.

I agree with this approach and consider it my favorite design right now. Student devices and purchase plans take the pressure off of school support staff. When purchase plans are negotiated well the devices will have extended warranties putting the support role back on the vendor. It gives districts the freedom to buy fewer, higher quality computers while driving toward an open technology and learning plan. Our families and students are buying connected devices anyway, why not leverage some group buying power for them and reduce the stress on staff and budgets at the same time?
It is not a security deposit - students will not be able to own the netbooks. In fact, the netbooks will be on a rental cycle through Dell - every 4 years they will be replaced with new computers.
