I am interested in knowing about various social learning networks (apart from Edmodo) that are secure and are used successfully in K-12 classrooms.

We have created a learning network for new Canadians settling into their new lives at LearnIt2teach.ca.  You can see a shell of our offering as at our  open site (login as a guest) at edulinc.ca.  Our normal courses are secure from the outside world in terms of discussion on forums, cooperation on wikis and other social activities.

I was not aware of LearnIt2teach.ca. Thanks for sharing this information!

I don't know what level you teach with, if you are dealing with secondary students, why not create a secret group on Facebook for them to use?  In one school I worked in we tried to use Fakebook, but that really never gained traction with the students because of the limitations.

Thanks!
