Collaborating for REAL Student Improvements!

As you visit/join this Distance Collaborations Group, you may want to give a few stats about yourself and your education position to let new/old group members know how they can collaborate with you.

Additionally, here's a terrific project where high school and college students can collaborate locally AND globally. There are infinite possibilities out there!

Hi! I am Mary , a primary school teacher teaching Tamil. I am proficient in both English and Tamil. I am in charge of the Media Resource Library in my school. I collaborate with the various departments in my school to run programmes for our pupils and staff. I also collaborate with the National Library Board of Singapore to promote reading schoolwide. As I am also a Competant Communicator in the Toastmaster's Club (District 80) I get trainers from the Toastmaster's clubs in Singapore to conduct 'Public Speaking Workshops' in English for my pupils. I now want to extend my collaboration beyond Singapore. Does anyone have any idea as to how I can do this? Please do let me know. God bless.

Hi! I have a group of twenty students (aged 15/16) in Johannesburg, South Africa studying English. We are setting up blogs based on reflection on the poetry/ideas covered during the year, and I would like to collaborate on an extension to this project perhaps involving chat. The students are all girls from three inner-city "disadvantaged" schools who attend an afternoon Academy at the private school where I teach ICTs. They thus have access to technology, but generally only between 13h00 GMT and 15h00 GMT on weekdays. E-mail exchanges are possible also. Anyone interested in this.

This map was created using a Chicago tutor/mentor program locator which is a product of the non profit organization I lead in Chicago.

My aim is to help volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs grow in high poverty neighborhoods, in areas with poorly performing schools or with too much area violence.

I put the maps in blog stories, intended to draw volunteers and donors to the programs in different parts of the city.

I would like to encourage teachers and students to use the program locator as part of their own learning, and communications activities, in ways that create more stories and reach more volunteers and donors, so that tutor/mentor programs grow in more parts of Chicago.

It does not matter where you are located. Students in England could be writing about poverty in Chicago, and ways the maps can be used to point volunteers and donors to programs in different neighborhoods. They could be doing this with the purpose of motivating people in London to duplicate this strategy.

Students in inner city schools could be using the maps for the same purpose, to draw resources into their school or their neighborhood.

If any of you would like to take on such an activity, the Program Locator is free to use. If you share links to any work being done with the maps, you can illustrate to others what they might also do.

Just joined this group as I am always on the look out for collaborations over distance among students in my position as Technology Director here in NYC. I work with colleagues across the spectrum of content areas in connecting their students with others. Finally, I try to keep my work real by teaching one section of Middle School English myself and include a couple of online connections each year in this course.

So, I am open to a varied number of approaches and projects if you wish to discuss ideas you have in mind. Our kids too have been very open to this method of learning and do a reasonably good job of articulating their experiences coming from this very diverse urban background. And.........they have come to appreciate what they learn from others, especially those who come from very different backgrounds and experiences.

We use any number of tools: Skype, IM, Moodle and such.

Hi
I've carried out an online exchange with a Scottish high school class via Skype. I'm teaching 8th graders. Our first language is German and my students learn English and French. I hope to find an English speaking class learning German.

Hi, I've been blogging with my second graders in Minnesota all year. We've participated in jenuinetech.com projects, created several voice threads, and skyped once. I'm teaching first grade next year and will continue blogging with them as a way to give students another audience to write for besides their teacher. I will be seeking out other ways to collaborate on projects with classrooms around the world. Check out this years blog: http://classblogmeister.com/blog.php?blogger_id=177885

Hey I am Allen,

I am not new here but I just joined this group. I teach and coordinate online courses or distance learning programs in different schools and colleges. I am on of the supporters of imparting education through distance learning to the students who live in remote areas and are unable to access universities or colleges.

Hope to find like minded people to network with.

Hello Colleagues,

I have just joined this group to learn how I can use distance learning to promote the training of Jewish educators irrespective of where they live.

By way of introduction, here is some background information.

I am a retired Coordinator of Professional Development Schools, University of Maryland at College, Park, MD where I taught undergraduates to become teachers, and graduate students to become instructional leaders. At this stage in my professional career I want to devote my time to improving the stature, quality and skills of Jewish educators.

Toward that end, I have started a blog which is entitled, Mentoring Jewish Students and Teachers, which you can find at this web address: http://richarddsolomonsblog.blogspot.com/

Here is an article that I wrote with Dr. Hana Bor, and Elaine Solomon,
which briefly discusses how we envision distance learning can be used to improve the training of Jewish educators: Solomon, Richard, Solomon, Elaine & Bor, Hana (Fall, 2007). From madrichim to expert educators: New Career Ladder for Professional Development for Supplementary and Day School Teachers, Jewish Education News, CAJE, Vol 28, No. 3, (Fall, 2007). http://caje.wikispaces.com/Jewish+Education+News

I hope to find colleagues who share my passion for the training of Jewish educators.

Thank you,

Richard
