For my global awareness lesson, I incorporated the website ePals.com. This is an online version of having a pen pal. My music appreciation students' task is to converse with a student from our foreign class. Over the course of one month, they are to discuss how music is viewed in their pen pal's culture. What are the uses of music? Is some form of a music education required for all students? This is global awareness because students are learning about another culture that is vastly different from their own. It is amazing to have the capability to talk with students across the world! They are also becoming aware of how a common form of entertainment and profession to many is viewed outside of my students' world.

Christine, I found ePals.com to be very interesting as well! I love the idea of having pen pals. There are a few kindergarten classes that participate in a pen pals program throughout the year and it is very interesting to see not only how the students respond to the letters but how hard the students work on their letters. This lesson sounds very interesting as well as very informative for the students. I agree that it is amazing to have the chance to talk to other students from around the world. It is so neat to how different they live. Great lesson!

Christine,
I also used ePals for my global awareness lesson. I found that it was very easy to use, and had a variety of projects and things to choose from. I love the idea of using it for musical purposes. Culture incorporate so many things, and music is certainly an important part. I would think that your students would have a lot to gain from talking to other students their own age about music in their culture. I agree with you that it is wonderful that we have the opportunities to speak to others halfway around the world. Your lesson sounds like a lot of fun!
