Global Awareness

I decided to have my secondary math class research income disparity between the US and a third world country. The students would be put into groups of two and research three careers and the income disparity between the US. Students would then analyze the data and statistically represent the data on a normal curve. They would then present the data in a multimedia presentation that includes a voice recording. I think that income disparity leads to exploitation and people being exploited leads to social injustice. Social injustice is an issue that needs greater attention regarding global awareness of social issues. Income disparity is a great cause of social injustice. That is how my project is considered part of a global awareness lesson. One of my units in math is a statistical measures unit and this project will fit in well with that unit.

I love the connection you have made between math and global awareness. Your lesson incorporates various subjects and learning opportunities, which is a great way to enhance student knowledge and understanding. I also like the topic you chose to teach your students. It is an important aspect of global awareness and something that they will one day have to deal with. It is a huge controversy in the U.S. and this lesson provides a valuable learning experience for your students.

Wow, Aaron, what a powerful lesson. Looking at the disparity of income between the US and other countries would be very eye opening. I can't help but think about manufacturers that exploit people to make goods with very little pay. It would be interesting to see if it gets students to think a little more carefully about the products that they buy here in the US. Your lesson would be one that I would love to participate in!
