The project that I selected is from http://cc.britishcouncil.org/; the lesson is from the education pack and the title is 100 words. The suggested curriculum link is English; I selected this activity because I believe that I can adjust it for my students and curriculum. My assignment focuses on learning terminology and radiographic procedure commands from different countries. The students will work in pairs and create a dictionary of basic directions and commands used when performing radiographic procedures. Next, they will create a video of the commands they selected and share their video with a classroom from another country that they joined on the website. They must select different countries to expose the class to a variety of languages; suggestions include countries in South America, Eastern Europe and Asia. They will watch the videos from the website classroom to learn words and phrases pertinent to health care in languages other than English. They will present their findings to the class during the final week of the semester. This lesson encourages global awareness because it allows the students the freedom to select their own classroom and explore the differences in words and phrases used when performing radiographic procedures. I hope to increase student understanding of diverse cultures and appropriate communication through self-awareness and interaction with classrooms from other countries. I also want to encourage implementation of appropriate instructions when performing radiographic procedures on a diverse patient population. This assignment is for the entire semester, during the first week the students will complete a survey on cultural awareness that I created and will present their findings to the class the final week of the semester. This assignment will have a value of one test grade.

Hello Gail!  What a great lesson to expose your students too.  I would love to be a participant of the class and see the differences between the cultures.  For students to learn the terminology and procedures by working in pairs researching the different countries they become interested and can associate and relate to what is being learned in class.  I like hearing that your students would be able to create a dictionary of what they have found and then share that in a video format to present to their class.  It is a great global awareness project to increase their participation and awareness of those from other countries.  I also think that by exposing them to the different cultures they then have a better understanding of the those from other countries.

Hi Gail,

I think this lesson would have a lifelong impact on students of all ages! It could be great for children who are just starting out and learning the vocabulary in a variety of languages could spark their interests and encourage them to learn other languages. I think it could also be great for students who are interested in going into the medical field because learning the vocabulary in a variety of languages would help them in the medical field in the USA as well as if they ever travel overseas. Sounds like a great lesson!
