Now that Barack Obama has become our president elect will others step up to the plate with the integrity, honesty, and passion that Mr. Obama has shown throughout this election? Will Obama's capacity for effective leadership rub off on the leaders of our schools? Will the mediocre leaders of our schools follow his lead?

Personally, I voted for Barack Obama due to his undeniable ability to lead. We should all be excited that we as a country have made history. Now, more than ever, we as educators need to step up and do what we can to assist president elect Obama to fix the mess eight years of unfunded mandates and neglect has done to our educational system.

Obama is truly a charismatic leader, with a gift for public speaking. He strikes me as a man who is willing to listen and make thoughtful decisions. It would be a great thing if he rubbed off on all leaders we would be a great deal better off. I am impressed by his intelligence and poise. These are qualities we so desperately need in our world and our schools.

I would not count on him discontinuing NCLB, but address the inequities of it like unfunded mandates is truly doable.
Whether he won the election, or not, and his ability to lead, remains to be seen. Often the most charismatic of leaders are the most ineffective. One thing is true. There has got to be a reversal, of the governmental mandates that have been set forth over the last eight years with regard to educational practice, nationally. Combine this with the techno-tools available, our possible misuse or over-use thereof, and the fact that we are asking kids to learn in ways we still do not know will exist in the 21 century, my question is this. In an educational environment, what are the characteristics of an effective leader, without regard, necessarily to title. Is leadership the same in the world of business? The Military? Government? It seems to me, that with the advent of the techno-evolution in which we are all involved, education has become a two steps forward, three steps back, process.
