What are skills vs. strategies for teaching reading?
I just attended a conference that really changed the way I define what is a reading skill and what is a reading strategy. My school always used to label inferring, summarizing, etc. as strategies, but after hearing Jennifer Serravallo talk, she called those things skills, with the understanding that the strategy is the tool you use in order to perform a skill. What do you think?

I have a ? about Debbie Miller's Reading With Meaning. She is teaching a grade 1 classroom and each chapter seems to be about teaching a new comp. strategy that takes her across the entire year...How would you use this book in a gr. 3 class...would you spend as much time on each strategy do you think?? She also has a great idea for collecting questions called a "wonder box" ...the children go outside and notice things and write questions about these things on index cards to be placed in their wonder boxes..I was thinking that perhaps this could be a method for collecting "noticings" or "small moments" to spark ideas for writing in their writer's notebooks...what do you all think??

Thanks for sharing such great ideas and links... i've spent a little time having a look and know my weekend will be busily checking out these great sites. I've been on a pretty steep learning journey over the last 12 months and am beginning more and more to investigate and incorporate web2.0 tools into my classroom practice. One of our favourite sites to use is a uk site called sebastian swan ... here you will find books to read online, linked webquests, teaching plans, questions, ideas for use in the classroom and so much more. We have read a few of these books online and the interactivity of the resource makes them great to use with an interactive whiteboard. Another great site is an Australian site from the sunshine state of Queensland. Beenleigh State school offers great literacy resources and also many more across the curriculum. Have you checked out Roy the Zebra - great interactive resource for shared and guided reading with loads of teacher support. The Woodlands literacy zone is another great resource I visit often.
